Married to a Gamer. Help!
My husband is a Gamer. Specifically RPGs. For the last few years, he’s really into World of Warcraft (WOW) and apparently he’s very good at this. His characters are popular among the WoW community. His Death Knight is at its highest level and everyone wants him to join their guild. I knew he was a gamer when we met, but that was before MMORPG. (Mass Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) We still had dial up.
AND……. I have no idea what I just said. As you can tell, I am NOT a gamer. My game addictions range from Angry Birds to Farmville and that’s just what I do when I’m bored. When I was younger I was real big into Mario and Street Fighter, but my interest in video games went out with the Nintendo 64.
I attempted my hand at WoW. I was a human warrior named Kellofwar. I made it to level nine before it got too hard. I kept dying by the hand of some type of mutant looking rat {{Agro!}} and I was annoyed that I’d have to spend 20 minutes as a spirit being and travel from the grave to find my body. It made me miss Mario. If you found a mushroom you got an extra life. If you lost all of your lives, you started over from your last save point. You have to be patient to play WoW.
I don’t understand elves, dwarfs, paladins, knights, wizards, or um…hobbits?. I mean, I’ve seen, Lord of the Rings and I love Harry Potter, but those are not real educational tools when it comes to understanding the world my husband lives in.
He has a t-shirt that says, “This shirt binds on equip”. You can’t imagine how many people compliment that t-shirt. He can strike up a conversation with any Tom, Dick, or Sally at the grocery store, the bank, or the kids’ school. These gamers are everywhere. They are taking over the world!
Some common characteristics I’ve noticed in gamers are patience, creativity and intelligence. Do not be fooled by things you don’t understand. Sure, most of what they are doing is playing pretend. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to grab a stick and call it a sword and climb trees (your fortress) and fight off the imaginary bad guys (probably a squirrel). What these people have done is take something we’ve always done as children and find a way to do it in our adult lives. They also made it a bad ass. {wink}
Even though I don’t think I have what it takes to be a gamer, I think that I can cope with being married to one.
If you, like me, are curious to what all the hype is, check out the links I’ve incorporated into this Hubb. Maybe next time your husband can’t help with chores or take you out to dinner because he has a “raid”, at least you’ll know what he’s talking about! {{he can't let down his guild}}
P.S. The only time this game has interfered with our real life is when I understood that my husand has used REAL money to purchase imaginary gold in another realm. HELLO!! I don't think so. LOL <--- now that's an acronym I understand.

Cool hub. Like anything else, moderation is the key to enjoying any hobby without getting too wrapped up in it. I'd try to give you hope and say he will outgrow it, but we both know better.
